Hudson Clement, one of West Virginia’s most significant losses of the 2025 transfer portal cycle, has announced his commitment to Illinois, ending any hopes that he might end up back with the Mountaineers.
A native of Martinsburg, West Virginia, Clement’s entry into the portal was an unfortunate surprise for the folks in Morgantown, and to see him head to the Big Ten has got to sting.
After joining the program as a walk-on, Clement worked himself into a position to play when Devin Carter missed the Duquesne game in 2023, and he made the most of his opportunity; five catches, 177 yards, and three touchdowns later, Clement had earned himself a scholarship.
The sophomore balled out in his final game with the program, as he logged 11 receptions for 166 yards and two scores against Memphis in the Frisco Bowl.
Clement ended the 2024 season as the Mountaineers’ leading receiver in catches (51), yards (741), and touchdowns (5) and will finish out his WVU career with 73 receptions for 1,221 yards and nine touchdowns.
The transfer portal officially opened on Monday, December 9, 2024, and will remain open until Saturday, December 28, with an exception for players on teams who play bowl games after the window closes. According to NCAA data, 2,273 FBS football players entered the transfer portal in 2023-24 school year, with 1,558 (68.5%) undergraduates and 715 (31.5%) graduate transfers. Of the entrants, 57% reported that they enrolled in another school, 8% withdrew their names from the portal, and 35% are still active, transferred to a non-NCAA school, or left their sport.
