Oklahoma’s Sack Leader Announces Return for 2025 Season

There weren’t many bright spots for the Oklahoma Sooners in 2024, but one of them was the long-awaited emergence of R Mason Thomas.

Oklahoma’s defense —particularly in the front seven— was stout in 2024, despite what the Sooners’ 6-7 record might suggest. However, they lose captain and tackle leader Danny Stutsman, as well as veteran All-American safety Billy Bowman, and were set to lose several other draft-eligible contributors.

However, the program has seen a rush of returning players on that side of the ball and has been patiently trying to learn what Thomas would do. On Monday, he finally made an announcement.

Thomas was a major part of why the Sooners were able to extend their 26-year bowl streak despite having one of the worst offenses in program history.

Finally becoming the top-tier pass rusher that he had shown in spring and summer sessions before suffering injury setbacks, “RMT” led the Sooners’ defense in sacks (9.0) and tackles for loss (12.5) in 2024, while also tacking on two forced fumbles and 23 total tackles.

After getting an elite pass rusher back, as well as the addition of two former defensive standouts in Marvin Jones Jr. and Kendal Daniels, it’s safe to say that today was a good day for Oklahoma football.
