West Virginia head football coach Rich Rodriguez has been filling out his staff over the last several days, and on Wednesday, he announced that his son, Rhett Rodriguez, will fill one of the key roles on his offensive staff.

Rhett will assume the role of quarterbacks coach after spending the 2024 season as an offensive analyst for the Jacksonville State Gamecocks, helping lead them to a CUSA conference championship.

“I am proud of Rhett for the path that he has taken. He was a true student-athlete at Arizona and Louisiana-Monroe, and that will serve him well as he continues his coaching career at West Virginia,” Rodriguez said. “He can relate to our student-athletes, and he has a great understanding of what we want and need to accomplish on offense. It will be special to coach with Rhett at my alma mater.”

Rhett Rodriguez, 26, played quarterback at Louisiana Monroe in 2021 and spent four seasons at Arizona (2017-20) before that.

During his time at ULM, Rodriguez served as a team captain and was “heavily involved in the weekly game planning as he assisted in breaking down opponent tendencies and analyzing film for the entire offensive unit,” according to a release from WVU.

“Aside from practically being another coach on the field, he completed 51% of his passes for the Warhawks, throwing for 799 yards and four touchdowns. His teammates voted him as the offensive representative on the player leadership council to not only the head coach but to the athletic administration.”

Rodriguez will have an intriguing room to work with in 2025, as the Mountaineers will have to replace Garrett Greene after he spent the last two seasons as the full-time starter.

Nicco Marchiol stuck around despite the coaching change, but WVU also landed Jaylen Henderson (Texas A&M) in the transfer portal.

At 6-3, 220 pounds, the newcomer could be the name to watch, as Henderson is a hand-in-glove fit for Rich Rod’s offensive scheme that requires a dual-threat signal-caller to reach its potential.
