David Beaty has found his next head coaching job as the top man at Denton, Texas high school. Most recently, the former head coach of the Kansas Jayhawks was the wide receivers coach for the Florida Atlantic Owls.
Denton ISD made the announcement on Tuesday night. Beaty will replace Billy Miller, who stepped down from his post shortly after the season ended following a disappointing tenure dating back to 2018. Denton is coming off a 2-8 campaign in 2024.
The 54-year-old coach started his career in the high school ranks in Texas, working his way up at Garland, before going to North Dallas to be the head coach in 2001, and then a successful four-year stint at Irving MacArthur from 2002 to 2005, led to his break into the college ranks when he became the passing coordinator at Rice in 2006 and 2007.
Beaty then ended up at Kansas in 2008 and 2009 as the wide receivers coach. That was the first of his three stints at KU. In 2011 he was the co-offensive coordinator, and then he returned as head coach from 2015 to 2018.
He went 6-42 in four seasons as head coach and 2-34 in Big 12 play. He was fired following the 2018 season.
In March 2019, Beaty sued the University of Kansas for breach of contract, alleging the university was avoiding to pay him a $3 million buyout. The two parties reached a $2.55 million settlement in June 2020.
Beaty has since spent time with the Texas Longhorns as a consultant, Houston Gamblers, and then most recently Florida Atlantic.
Between North Dallas and Irving MacArthur, Beaty has a high school coaching record of 39-15.
