The 2024 season did not go as Kyle Whittingham and the Utah Utes had planned, giving the program its first losing season since 2013 and just its third season under .500 since 2005.
One of the main contributors to the lack of success was issues at quarterback, with Cam Rising having another injury-riddled year and Isaac Wilson struggling to transition to the college level, throwing for 10 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
The abysmal offensive production resulted in Whittingham bringing a new offensive coordinator, Jason Beck (New Mexico), and a new quarterback in Lobos’ transfer, Devon Dampier.
The writing has been on the wall for quite some time, but today, Whittingham confirmed that Cam Rising is no longer on the Utes’ roster.
“I’ve talked to Cam a few times, but that is really up to Cam to divulge (his plan) when he wants to divulge what his plan is,” Coach Whittingham said via KSL Sports. “We’ve certainly had communication and you don’t see him on the roster right now, so that should tell you some things there.”
Rising appeared in just three games for the Utes in 2024, and was far removed from the player we’d grown used to seeing in his most recent appearance against Arizona State in Week 7.
In a 29-17 loss, a clearly hobbled Rising went just 16/37 for 209 yards and three interceptions. In his other two appearances, Rising was 18/29 for 346 yards and seven touchdowns with zero interceptions, adding 46 rushing yards on six carries.
Over his four-year stint at Utah, Rising completed 63.1% of his attempts for 6,127 yards with 65 total touchdowns and 19 interceptions.
