There are well-established reports that the “Deion to Dallas” noise is more than a little smoke, but there’s no question that losing Sanders to the Cowboys would be catastrophic for the Colorado Buffaloes.
In the year preceding his arrival in Boulder, the Buffs were just 1-11 and the worst Power Four team in college football. Now, just two years into his tenure, Colorado is fresh off a nine-win campaign and the home to a Heisman Trophy winner, among a slew of other national awards.
If Deion Sanders were to reunite with Jerry Jones, which he almost certainly would if offered the job, it would reset the CU football program, and in Year 2 of a new conference, no less.
So, one would think that Colorado would do anything that it could to keep Coach Prime around, right?
On Thursday afternoon, Jane Slater of NFL Network reported that Sanders approached Colorado athletic director Rick George earlier this week, requesting more money for NIL and his staff. However, his request was apparently met with resistance.
With everything seemingly pointing to Dallas, it’s hard to imagine that Colorado wouldn’t do whatever it takes—if at all possible—to keep Sanders around. But, if Slater’s reports are true, the Buffs’ AD might be willing to let him walk.
Jones, the longtime owner of the Cowboys’ franchise, has been one of the hardest reads in the industry since he bought the team in 1989. With how unpredictable he’s proven to be, it’s hard to know whether Deion is a “top candidate” as he suggested or whether he’s trying to help a good friend benefit in his current position.
However, one thing in this process is clear: Sanders and Jones are tight, and if they come to an agreement to make him the face of the franchise, it will send the sports world into a frenzy.
