For years, one event that fans of the Nebraska Cornhuskers could set their clocks by used to be the Spring Football game.
That event is no longer taking place this season as the Cornhuskers have changed their stance on the game due to the impact of the transfer portal.
The drastic change to Nebraska’s schedule stems from head coach Matt Rhule’s concern for the state of tampering in college football, where someone could try and steal a player on their roster at any given moment.
“The word ‘tampering’ doesn’t exist anymore,” Rhule said at a recent press conference. “It’s just an absolutely free open common market. I don’t necessarily want to open up to the outside world and have people watch our guys and say, ‘He looks like a pretty good player. Let’s go get him.’”
The Cornhuskers had six different players enter the transfer portal the week after the 2024 Spring Game, which Rule took notice of.
“I dealt with a lot of people offering our players a lot of opportunities after that,” Rhule continued. “So you go out and bring in a bunch of new players and showcase them for all the other schools to watch? Doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.”
While the event has been a significant financial boost for Nebraska Football in the program’s history, times are changing at an alarming rate. For fans of Nebraska, the switch solidifies yet another change to a historic program.
