We’ve entered the home stretch of the 2024-25 college basketball season, and the margin of error is dwindling as teams do everything they can to secure bids and seeds in the NCAA Men’s Tournament next month.
Conference races are well underway, too, and as the top leagues in the sport creep closer to their tournaments, the pressure is starting to mount.
It’s safe to say that teams are starting to feel that pressure after what we witnessed this past weekend. ESPN tweeted out a graphic noting that 11 ranked teams took a loss, tied for the most ranked losses in a single day in AP Poll history.
Ten of the 11 losses by ranked teams came against lower-ranked or unranked opponents. Take a look at the list of outcomes below.
- Oklahoma def. No. 24 Vanderbilt, 97-67
- No. 1 Auburn def. No 23 Ole Miss, 92-82
- Kansas State def. No. 3 Iowa State, 80-61
- No. 8 Tennessee def. No. 5 Florida, 64-44
- No. 22 Texas Tech def. No. 6 Houston, 82-81
- USC def. No. 7 Michigan State, 70-64
- No. 25 UConn def. No. 9 Marquette, 77-69
- Baylor def. No. 11 Kansas, 81-70
- Arkansas def. No. 12 Kentucky, 89-79
- No. 20 Missouri def. No. 14 Mississippi State, 88-61
- Georgia Tech def. No. 21 Louisville, 77-70
The chaos also stretched into Sunday, as unranked Nebraska took down No. 16 Oregon, 77-71, and 19th-ranked Memphis had to hold on for dear life against Rice to win, 86-83.
There should be major shakeup in the polls this week as a result of all the madness, and perhaps even more shakeup in the next bracketology update.
