Over the past few years, we’ve seen several Blue-Blood basketball programs undergo a changing of the guard at the head coaching position.
Roy Williams started the trend in 2021 when he decided to hang it up after 33 years between Kansas and North Carolina, spending his final 18 years with the Tar Heels.
Mike Krzyzewski called it quits after 42 seasons as the head coach at Duke following the 2022 season, ending a truly remarkable career at the end of the bench. Last season, we saw John Calipari leave Kentucky after 15 seasons as the Wildcats’ head coach, and this year, Tony Bennett left Virginia after turning the Cavaliers into a national power.
Now, it appears that another true blue-blood could soon be looking for a new head coach.
According to a report from Jeff Goodman, Indiana head coach Mike Woodson is contemplating stepping down from his position and retiring amid a tough stretch for the Hoosiers.
“The Hoosiers have lost 6 of their last 7, Woodson has lost the support of high-level boosters and there have been ongoing discussions today about his future, source told the Field of 68,” Goodman said in a tweet. “If Woodson does retire, the current plan would be for him to finish out the season. Indiana faces Michigan on Saturday at Assembly Hall.”
The difference between Woodson and the coaches mentioned above is that he’s only been at Indiana for four years, and there hasn’t been a lot to write home about.
Indiana is a five-time national champion and one of the traditional powers in college basketball, and two tournament appearances in just four years just isn’t enough to stick around, even if you are a former star for the Hoosiers.
If the Indiana job does come open, it’ll certainly be a storyline for Big 12 fans to watch, as a job that big doesn’t come open very often.
