According to a report from 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz, Colorado defensive line coach Damione Lewis is expected to leave the program to take over as the defensive line coach for the Miami Hurricanes.
Lewis, a Miami alum, spent just one season under Deion Sanders and helped make a significant impact on the defensive side of the ball in Boulder. Colorado struggled defensively in 2023, and their performance up front played a role.
However, in 2024, the Buffs led the Big 12 in both sacks (34) and tackles for loss (79), and were one of the most disruptive groups in the league.
Prior to his time at Colorado, Lewis spent four seasons coaching the defensive line for the Seattle Seahawks under defensive coordinator Clint Hurtt—now the defensive line coach for the Philadelphia Eagles.
Lewis played at Miami for five seasons (1996-2000) and was a standout defender on the interior throughout his time there, totaling 220 career tackles, 15.5 sacks, and five forced fumbles.
He would eventually be the 12th overall pick to the St. Louis Rams in the 2001 NFL Draft and played in the NFL for 10 seasons.
Now, with Lewis headed out, it’s reasonable to wonder if Warren Sapp will step in and become the next defensive line coach at Colorado in 2025. Sapp, a seven-time Pro Bowler and six-time All-Pro selection, served as the Senior quality control analyst in Boulder for the 2024 season.
