On Monday I wrote about how the Big 12 Conference women’s basketball tournament seedings were shaping up. It had about a six-hour shelf life.
No. 17 West Virginia defeated No. 12 Kansas State, 70-57, in President’s Day matinee on Monday and shook up the top part of the tournament seeding race.
But exactly how much? Let’s update the seeds after the WVU win.
As a reminder, we used the Big 12 rules on the web site for tiebreakers.
So, if the Big 12 women’s tournament started today, here is how the tournament would be seeded.
Seeds Nos. 1-4: Double Byes
No. 1 TCU (12-2)
No. 2 Baylor (12-2)
No. 3 Kansas State (12-3)
No. 4 Utah (11-3)
That’s how quickly things changed. Kansas State went from No. 1 to No. 3 with the loss. TCU moved up to the top spot and Baylor slid up to No. 2. TCU gets the No. 1 seed because it beat Baylor earlier this season. The Horned Frogs and the Bears have another meeting coming up.
Utah stays at No. 4 due to winning percentage (K-State is at .800 and Utah is at .786). Even if Utah wins later this week and they’re tied, K-State would stay at No. 3 because the Wildcats beat the Utes earlier this season and the two teams won’t play again.
Teams with double byes don’t play until the quarterfinals.
Seeds Nos. 5-8: Single Byes
No. 5 West Virginia (11-4)
No. 6 Oklahoma State (10-4)
No. 7 Iowa State (9-5)
No. 8 Colorado (8-6)
WVU moves up to No. 5 based on winning percentage (.733) over Oklahoma State. (.715). But remember — OSU and WVU split their season series. Next is each team’s winning percentage versus the team occupying the highest position in the final regular season standings.
For now, that team is TCU. Oklahoma State beat TCU and WVU played the Horned Frogs later this week.
Tuesday is a huge night for the Cowgirls. They face Utah and it’s the only meeting between the two teams. If OSU wins, then we have some ties to break for the No. 4 seed between OSU, WVU and Utah.
Teams that receive single byes don’t play until the second round.
First Round (Seeds 9-16)
No. 9 Arizona (6-8)
No. 10 Cincinnati (6-8)
No. 11 (tie) Kansas (4-10)
No. 11 (tie) BYU (4-10)
No. 13 Texas Tech (3-11)
No. 14 UCF (2-12)
No. 15 Arizona State (2-12)
No. 16 Houston (1-13)
No changes here. As we noted on Monday:
Arizona has the tiebreaker over Cincinnati due to head-to-head.
Kansas and BYU haven’t played each other yet and the head-to-head tiebreaker will apply once they do.
UCF has the tiebreaker over Arizona State due to head-to-head.
