Big 12 Running Back Coach Heading to the SEC
According to On3’s Pete Nakos, West Virginia running backs coach Chad Scott is leaving the Mountaineers and heading to the Texas Longhorns in 2025, where he’ll assume the same role for the Longhorns. Scott, who briefly served as interim head coach following Neal Brown’s dismissal, played a crucial part in developing one of the nation’s most dynamic rushing offenses over the past few seasons.
In 2024, West Virginia ranked 10th among all Power Conference programs (27th overall) with an impressive 193.69 rushing yards per game. The Mountaineers’ run game was even more dominant in 2023, finishing 4th nationally and 1st among all Power Five schools, with 228.92 rushing yards per game. Scott’s expertise and coaching ability have been pivotal in establishing this success.
Under Scott’s guidance, WVU running backs CJ Donaldson and Jahiem White became standout players in the Big 12. Donaldson accumulated 2,058 yards and 30 touchdowns on 4.9 yards per carry over three seasons in Morgantown. His performance was strong enough to earn him a transfer to Ohio State, where he’ll play a key role in the Buckeyes’ backfield in 2025.
White also emerged as a significant playmaker for the Mountaineers, rushing for 1,687 yards and 11 touchdowns (6.5 ypc) while adding 247 receiving yards and three more touchdowns in the past two years. His big-play ability made him a constant threat.
Scott’s departure leaves a void for Rich Rodriguez and the rest of the WVU coaching staff to fill. While WVU will have to adjust, Scott will transition to working with Texas’ talented backfield. Among his new stars is CJ Baxter, a former five-star recruit who’s expected to make a huge impact in 2025. His experience and coaching style will help Texas’ offense continue to thrive.
Under Scott’s tutelage, WVU running backs CJ Donaldson and Jahiem White became household names in the Big 12.
Over a three-year stint in Morgantown, Donaldson rushed fort 2,058 yards and 30 touchdowns on 4.9 yards per carry. He has since transferred to Ohio State and will be one of the feature backs for the Buckeyes in 2025.
Meanwhile, White became a consistent homerun hitter for the Mountaineers offense over the last two seasons, totaling 1,687 yards and 11 touchdowns on the ground (6.5 ypc), plus another 247 yards and three scores as a receiver.
Scott’s departure leaves a void for Rich Rodriguez and company to fill, while he will immediately begin his stint in Austin with top-shelf talent, such as CJ Baxter, a former five-star running back that should be among the best in college football in 2025.
