There’s been some rumors swirling about the potential of Bill Self looking to retire after the 2024-25 season. Most of the discussion points back to a recent episode of The Field of 68 Podcast with John Goodman.
After a 74-67 loss to Utah, Goodman and his co-hosts discussed the potential of Self hanging it up.
“Would it shock you to see Bill Self retire?” Goodman asked.
“I think this might be it for him,” Fanta told the crew.
Goodman closed out with, “I’ll put it this way, I would not be shocked if Bill Self says, ‘you know what, I’m good.
Self, 62, has heard the noise, and one media outlet recently asked him if the rumors were true. Adam Zagoria of NJ Advanced Media reached out to the Jayhawks head coach, and the response he got back was pretty telling.
Self simply said, “No,” putting the rumors to bed.
Now, if they were true, what’s he supposed to do? Leave room for conjecture while trying to get his team back on track ahead of the Big 12 Tournament?
Self has been at Kansas for 22 seasons now and has enjoyed more success than most coaches that have come and gone during his tenure. He’s won two national championships, multiple National Coach of the Year honors, and 24 total Big 12 regular season and tournament championships.
If he is hanging it up, he’s put together a Hall of Fame career. But, for now, it appears that Self will be back for his Jordan year in Lawrence, Kansas.
Kansas (19-9, 10-7) will host No. 10 Texas Tech (21-7, 12-5) on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. CT on ESPN.
