While Jon Gruden may not find himself on the sidelines as the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders anymore, he’s gotten back to his routes of “Gruden’s QB Camp” as a member of Barstool Sports.
Gruden sat down for an interview with former Iowa State quarterback Hunter Dekkers and mentioned his intrigue surrounding the NFL prospect.
Gruden asked Dekkers for the behind-the-scenes information on what happened to end his career with the Cyclones, which prompted a thought-provoking answer from the Iowa native.
“I was a dumb kid who got caught up in the wrong things,” Dekkers said. “Obviously, an unfortunate situation. Just a stupid kid being stupid at a young age. I’ve learned more life lessons throughout that time, and I’ve learned more about myself as a player and as a person that I see the good in it now a lot more than the bad.”
One season after Dekkers accepted a plea deal for underage gambling and was removed from the team, he announced his decision to move to the JUCO level and take the field as a member of the Iowa Western Community College football team.
In his career at Iowa Western, Dekkers threw for 3,806 yards and 32 touchdowns in 13 games played. He averaged 292.8 yards per game and led the Reivers to an 11-2 record.
