On Tuesday, West Virginia lost a second name to the transfer portal just minutes after losing their head coach.
After West Virginia’s Darian DeVries accepted the head coaching job at Indiana, the Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman added that DeVries’ son Tucker would be following him to Indiana.
In 2024-25, DeVries saw action in eight games prior to a shoulder injury that kept him out for the remainder of the season. Before the injury, DeVries was averaging 14.9 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game on 41.2% shooting from the field.
DeVries started his career as a freshman at Drake, with his Dad as the head coach where he spent three seasons. During his three-year career, he became one of the best forwards in the nation, posting more than 18 points per game.
The move comes just two days after the Mountaineers controversially missed the NCAA Tournament, being snubbed from the tournament field after being included in the field on 111 of 111 different bracketologists’ projections.
DeVries will now follow his father to Indiana, after news broke of Darian DeVries’ decision to leave the Mountaineers after one year with the program.
The transfer portal officially opens on Monday, March 24, 2025. According to NCAA data, 1,296 FBS basketball players entered the transfer portal in 2023-24 school year, with 864 (66.7%) undergraduates and 432 (33.3%) graduate transfers. Of the entrants, 70% reported that they enrolled in another school, 6% withdrew their names from the portal, and 23% are still active, transferred to a non-NCAA school, or left their sport.
