Big 12 baseball is in full swing as we just wrapped up the second weekend of conference play.
Last week, we had a shakeup in the rankings, and this week is no different.
So, without further due, here are my Big 12 baseball power rankings for the week!
#1 Arizona State (Last Week: 4)
We have a new number one with Arizona State. Last week, I ranked them in the top four and now they get the top spot after taking two out of three from a feisty Kansas team at home. Coming into the season, I wasn’t sure what to expect from the Sun Devils but as of now, they look like the best team in the Big 12.
#2 Arizona (Last Week: 5)
We stay in the Grand Canyon state for the two spot on the list. Just like their rival Arizona State, I had Arizona in my top five last week. The Wildcats got a series win against West Virginia in Morgantown which was really impressive to me.
#3 West Virginia (Last Week: 1)
After being ranked number one a week ago, I decided to move the Mountaineers a couple spots down after a tough series loss to Arizona. I know West Virginia is a good team but I am not quite sure how high their ceiling is since they have only played four conference games so far.
#4 Kansas (Last Week: 3)
I know the Jayhawks lost but they gave Arizona State all they could handle this past weekend and were a blown save away from winning that series in Tempe. Despite the loss, I am still a very big believer in this ball club with that offense of theirs that can score runs on just about anyone.
#5 Kansas State (Last Week: 6)
While Kansas may be the one stealing headlines in the state of Kansas, don’t sleep on this Kansas State team. They swept Utah opening weekend top open up Big 12 play and just took down an improved Baylor team this past weekend.
#6 Oklahoma State (Last Week: 2)
Perhaps nobody in the Big 12 had a more disappointing weekend than Oklahoma State. They were heavy favorites against Utah this past weekend and they looked lifeless in two out of their three games in Salt Lake City.
#7 TCU (Last Week: 7)
The Horned Frogs responded quite well after a tough series loss to Arizona State two weeks ago. They went into Lubbock and took two out of three from the Red Raiders which isn’t easy to do.
#8 Texas Tech (Last Week: 9)
It’s very rare I bump a team up after a loss but that is just the way things shook out with this power ranking. Tech lost a tough series against TCU thanks to a Sunday rubber match that went to extra innings. Even though they lost, I still feel a lot better about where this team is now compared to two weeks ago.
#9 Houston (Last Week: 12)
After being swept by the Red Raiders two weekends ago, the Cougars responded with a nice series win against UCF on the road. I know Houston isn’t a Big 12 title contender, but they are much improved from a year ago.
#10 UCF (Last Week: 8)
The Knights have played with fire multiple times this season and they got burned against Houston at home. While I am not hitting the panic button on this team by any means because the schedule only gets tougher from here.
#11 Utah (Last Week: 14)
How about Utah? The Utes are coming off a big series win against Oklahoma State at home and that was much needed after a rough opening weekend against Kansas State.
#12 BYU (Last Week: 13)
I will be honest; I wasn’t surprised to see BYU beat Cincinnati, so there really wasn’t a wow factor for me, considering I have the Bearcats down the list. However, I think the Cougars can be a team that can sneak up on some people this year.
#13 Baylor (Last Week: 10)
I think it’s safe to say that this team has fallen back to reality over the last two weekends. After a hot start in non-conference play, the Bears took a beating in Lawrence to kick off conference play and then just lost a series to Kansas State this past weekend.
#14 Cincinnati (Last Week: 11)
That top 25 ranking seems like a lifetime ago after this weekend. The Bearcats were swept by Arizona opening weekend and just lost two out of three to BYU this past weekend. The fall this team has taken over the last few weeks has to hurt because it’s tough to watch.
