While it may be unlikely, the possibility of former West Virginia head coach Bob Huggins returning to basketball is starting to grow with a new job opening.
Following Will Wade’s decision to accept a new job with the NC State Wolfpack, McNeese is left open after their impressive NCAA Tournament run.
Huggins was listed in a recent tweet from the Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman, throwing out some possible candidates for the vacancy.
“Here’s a list of potential candidates for the McNeese State opening, sources told the Field of 68,” Goodman said. “Bill Armstrong (Baylor), former West Virginia head coach Bob Huggins, James Miller (Okl St.), Matt Woodley (Wake), former Tennessee head coach Donnie Tyndall, Chase Buford (KU) and former NBA head coach Sam Mitchell.”
While Huggins’ track record on the court was good enough to land him in the Hall of Fame, his glaring issue with alcoholism tainted his otherwise incredible career. Since his DUI arrest, Huggins has been laying low and staying out of headlines.
With the potential of landing the McNeese job, his past will be brought back into the spotlight, with the Athletic Department deciding if it’s time to give Huggins a second chance.
Nearly one year ago today, West Virginia mega-donor Ken Kendrick said that Huggins’ future at West Virginia was null and void, that he had no place in the lives of young men.
Could Huggins overcome the setback? Potentially so, but Big 12 fans will have to wait and see what happens next in Lake Charles, Louisiana.
