On Tuesday, the West Virginia Mountaineers lost another player to the transfer portal, which is a big one.

On3’s Joe Tipton was the first to announce that sophomore forward Amani Hansberry has decided to go portaling following a successful season with the Mountaineers.

In 2024-25, Hansberry saw action in 31 games, averaging 23.6 minutes per game. In his first season in Morgantown, the Maryland native posted 9.8 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game. He finished the year shooting 42.9% from the field, 29.2% from three, and 75% from the free-throw line.

Coming out of Mount Saint Joseph in the Class of 2023, Hansberry was listed as a four-star prospect by the 247Sports index and the nation’s 61st-ranked player. He also checked in as the 13th-ranked player at his position and the top-ranked player in the state of Maryland.

The transfer portal officially opens on Monday, March 24, 2025. According to NCAA data, 1,296 FBS basketball players entered the transfer portal in 2023-24 school year, with 864 (66.7%) undergraduates and 432 (33.3%) graduate transfers. Of the entrants, 70% reported that they enrolled in another school, 6% withdrew their names from the portal, and 23% are still active, transferred to a non-NCAA school, or left their sport.
