Big 12 baseball is in full swing, as we just wrapped up the third weekend of conference play.
Last week, we had a major shakeup in the power rankings, and this week is no different.
So, without further ado, here are my Big 12 baseball power rankings for the week!
#1 Arizona State (Last Week: 1)
The Sun Devils remain in my top spot this week after sweeping Utah in Salt Lake City. So far this season, Arizona State has arguably been the most consistent team in the Big 12 and they are playing really well at the moment.
#2 Kansas (Last Week: 4)
Speaking of playing well, one can make a case for the Jayhawks to take the top spot on the list after sweeping Oklahoma State who was once the favorite to win the conference. It’s been over ten years since Kansas has made the postseason, and right now, I have a hard time seeing that streak continue because this team is for real.
#3 West Virginia (Last Week: 3)
I decided to keep the Mountaineers at three after their wild battle against BYU in Provo. West Virginia scored 44 runs this past weekend, and it turned out that they needed every run they could get against the Cougars.
#4 Kansas State (Last Week: 5)
While Kansas may get all the attention in the Sunflower State, don’t sleep on this Kansas State team. The Wildcats are playing their best baseball at the moment and just swept Texas Tech this past weekend.
#5 TCU (Last Week: 7)
I still have my doubts about the Horned Frogs, but a series win on the road over an improved Houston team was good for this team. I am not sure just how good this team is quite yet but don’t count them out.
#6 Arizona (Last Week: 2)
As someone who thought Arizona could have taken the top spot this week just a few days ago, it appears the Wildcats have comeback down to earth just a little after their tough series loss to Baylor.
#7 Oklahoma State (Last Week: 6)
To be honest, I probably should bump the Cowboys further down the list after getting swept by Kansas, but the Jayhawks are a really good team. However, a 1-6 start in Big 12 play is not ideal for a team that was favored to win the Big 12.
#8 Baylor (Last Week: 13)
Anytime you come into Tucson and walk away with a series win, it is a huge deal, and Baylor did just that. The Bears have been inconsistent since conference play started but the one thing you can’t do is count this team out.
#9 Texas Tech (Last Week: 8)
Much like Oklahoma State, this team deserves to be pushed down the list but due to other factors, I couldn’t. But getting swept by Kansas State isn’t what this team needed right now.
#10 Houston (Last Week: 9)
While the Cougars are better than they were a year ago, this team still has yet to wow me this season. Every now and then, they will show flashes of being good, but they haven’t won a big series yet.
#11 Cincinnati (Last Week: 14)
If anyone needed a bounce-back weekend, it was Cincinnati, and they did just that. The Bearcats swept UCF at home as they look to climb back into the Big 12 title race.
#12 BYU (Last Week: 12)
I kept BYU in the same spot as they were last week after a series loss to West Virginia. The Cougars put up a ton of runs against the Mountaineers, which was great. Unfortunately for them, they gave up over 40 runs in the process.
#13 UCF (Last Week: 10)
Man, oh man, UCF continues to slide down this list every single week. The Knights were just swept by Cincinnati this past weekend, who was ranked dead last in my power rankings a week ago.
#14 Utah (Last Week: 11)
The Utes now find themselves at the bottom of the power rankings after getting swept by Arizona State this past weekend. While I don’t expect them to compete for a Big 12 title, I was expecting a little bit more from this team after a decent start to the year in the non-conference.
