It’s the off-season in the NFL and college football, which is a time for planning for the future, both short-term and long-term. Teams are not only trying to figure out what their rosters will look like, but trying to figure out, in some cases, where they will be playing the future.

In the case of the Kansas City Chiefs, they are in the process of deciding whether or not to stay outdoors at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, or potentially go to the Kansas side of the state line and build a domed stadium.

On Monday, Chiefs team President Mark Donovan talked about the possibility of a domed stadium, which would cost around $3 billion, and discussed future events they could host, telling the Kansas City Star, “A big part of that (price) making sense is Final Four, Super Bowl, Big 12 championship, more concerts.”

After a six-year hiatus from 2011 to 2016, the Big 12 football Championship Game returned in 2017 and has been exclusively played at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, home of the Dallas Cowboys. But, Arrowhead Stadium has hosted Big 12 Championships in the past.

Arrowhead Stadium and the Big 12 Championship

Arrowhead Stadium hosted five Big 12 football Championship games from 2000 to 2008, in 2000, 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2008.

In 2000, Oklahoma beat K-State 27-24, in 2003, K-State beat Oklahoma 35-7, and then in 2004, OU handled Colorado 42-3. In 2006, Oklahoma beat Nebraska 21-7 and then in 2008 it was the Sooners blasting Missouri 62-21.

Other than AT&T Stadium, Arrowhead has hosted the most Big 12 Championships.

In 2023, the Big 12 Conference announced an extension to keep its football championship at AT&T Stadium through 2030. While Dallas is also where the Big 12 Conference is headquartered, Jerry World remains one of the premier football venues in the country located in the football-crazed state of Texas.
