In a rough break for Wes Miller and the Cincinnati Bearcats basketball team, one of their best players from he 2024-25 season has elected to enter his name into the transfer portal.
Cincinnati forward Dillon Mitchell became the latest Cincinnati athlete to hit the portal on Tuesday, following a rough stretch that saw more than six different athletes on the squad hit the portal.
After starting his career with the Texas Longhorns, where he spent two seasons under Rodney Terry, Mitchell elected to transfer to Cincinnati. In his lone season with the Bearcats, the Florida native posted 9.9 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game on 61.4% shooting from the field.
Coming out of Monteverde High School in the Class of 2022, Mitchell was listed as a five-star prospect by the 247Sports index and the nation’s fifth-ranked player. He also checked in as the second-ranked player at his position and the second-ranked player in the state of Florida.
“At 6-7, has a long and thin build,” 247Sports’ Jerry Meyer said. “Does need to build strength but has electric athleticism. Bouncy and runs like a gazelle. One of the top athletes in the 2022 class. A lefty with a sidewinder shot. His long distance shot is his main weakness, but it is improving and solid in the midrange. Excels at attacking the rim and finishing with authority. Is a high level rebounder who can initiate the break. Handles the ball well and sees the court and has a feel for passing. Can also run the lanes at an elite level. Defense is perhaps his best attribute. Can be a shut down defender. Versatile as well. Tough to find a player he can’t guard.”
The transfer portal officially opened on Monday, March 24, 2025. According to NCAA data, 1,296 FBS basketball players entered the transfer portal in the 2023-24 school year, with 864 (66.7%) undergraduates and 432 (33.3%) graduate transfers. Of the entrants, 70% reported that they enrolled in another school, 6% withdrew their names from the portal, and 23% are still active, transferred to a non-NCAA school, or left their sport.
