Cam Skattebo’s team might not have won the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, but it wasn’t because their best player didn’t show up in a massive way.
When the game was on the line, Skattebo shined brighter than anyone else on the field, especially in the final frame of regulation. In the fourth quarter alone, Skattebo had a 42-yard passing touchdown, a 62-yard reception, and a two-yard rushing touchdown to tie the game at 24-24.
On Thursday, Skattebo appeared on the Dan Patrick Show and actually revealed the play call on one of those monstrous plays.
“It was actually supposed to be a throw-back to the quarterback,” Skattebo told Patrick. “I checked my receiver to a fade ball and I seen him went inside. Sam told me, ‘The drive before, somebody rolled up on my ankle. I can’t really run, so you’re going to have to make something happen.
“The Philly Special was called. I looked at my receiver and it was one-on-one out there. I knew as soon as I caught the ball from the toss that safety was going to come flying down because he was flying down all game.”
So, as it turns out, Skattebo wasn’t even supposed to take the deep shot — he just checked into it and chunked it deep. That’s some high-level competitor stuff.
Against the best defense in the country, Skattebo finished the day with 284 all-purpose yards, 143 rushing yards (4.9 ypc), and three touchdowns, and inn the biggest game of his life, Arizona State’s best player left it all on the field.
After the game, Skattebo became the first player on the losing team in 26 years to win a Peach Bowl MVP award.
