Now that the Big 12 football season has wrapped up, and the NFL regular season nears a conclusion, speculation will build around potential coaching moves.
And just like the sun rising in the East and setting in the West, you can’t have a coaching carousel conversation in recent years without Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell‘s name coming up.
According to New York Jets reporter and The Athletic senior writer Zack Rosenblatt, Matt Campbell “would be willing” to take an interview with the Jets this offseason as the franchise searches for a new head coach.
As Iowa State fans will recall, the Jets were interested in Campbell back in 2018-19, but the head coach declined to interview with the franchise.

The Jets remain a franchise in complete disarray, going through two head coaches, Adam Gase and Robert Saleh, since they first showed interest in Campbell six years ago.
The franchise hasn’t finished above .500 since 2015 (10-6) and hasn’t made the playoffs since 2010 under Rex Ryan, when they lost to the Patriots in the AFC Championship Game.
Matt Campbell’s Recent Contract Extension
Campbell is fresh off getting the Cyclones to the Big 12 Championship Game for the second time in the last five seasons, where they lost to the Arizona State Sun Devils. He also recently signed a contract extension that runs into the next decade.
2024 was the first 10-win season in the program’s 133-year history and its seventh bowl game in nine seasons. The new eight-year contract is expected to keep him in Ames through December 31, 2032.
“My family and I are extremely grateful for the faith and commitment shown to our program by our President, Dr. Wintersteen, and our Athletics Director, Jamie Pollard,” Campbell said in a statement. “It is an honor to be associated with a great university and community, and I am thankful to work with great leaders, administrators and student-athletes. I look forward to finishing the 2024 season strong while continuing to grow this program and pursuing excellence in the classroom and on the field.”

This past season, Campbell became the winningest coach in Iowa State football history. The record-breaking win came in a 20-0 victory over Houston, which broke the previous record of 56 wins by Dan McCarney.
Campbell and the Cyclones began the year 4-0, which hasn’t been done at Iowa State since 2000. He is a three-time Big 12 football coach of the year in 2017, 2018 and 2020.
