According to a report from Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell is expected to interview for the head coaching vacancy with the Chicago Bears.
This report marks the second time that Campbell has been loosely tied to an NFL opening, as The Athletic‘s Zack Rosenblatt said that he “would be willing” to take an interview with the Jets this offseason as the franchise searches for a new head coach.
As Iowa State fans will recall, the Jets were interested in Campbell back in 2018-19, but the head coach declined to interview with the franchise.
Campbell has been with Iowa State since the 2016 season and is fresh off of leading the Cyclones to their first 11-win season in school history.
A native of Massillon, Ohio, Campbell grew up just a few hundred miles from Chicago and is as strong a candidate for the job as there is out there.
Iowa State has done the best job it could to protect their head coach, as they just recently signed Campbell a contract extension that runs into the 2030s.
Campbell is fresh off getting the Cyclones to the Big 12 Championship Game for the second time in the last five seasons, where they lost to the Arizona State Sun Devils.
2024 was the first 10-win season in the program’s 133-year history and its seventh bowl game in nine seasons. The new eight-year contract is expected to keep him in Ames through December 31, 2032.
