On Thursday, Georgia quarterback Carson Beck made waves across college football when he announced that he would be entering the transfer portal rather than going to the NFL Draft, as was the original plan.
Shortly after the reports started to circulate, On3’s Pete Nakos reported that there were three “teams to watch” in the race to land Beck’s services.
The Miami Hurricanes are the apparent favorite — Beck is dating Hanna Cavinder (Miami WBB) — and appear to be willing to fork over a boatload of cash to have Beck be Cam Ward’s successor.
However, one of the other teams said to be in the mix is Texas Tech, which has improved its roster as much as anyone in the country during this portal cycle.
While the report still stands, Texas Tech Football general manager James Blanchard appears to be hinting that there might be more smoke than fire to this one.
FootballScoop’s Zach Barnett tweeted that he’d be “very surprised” if Texas Tech and Ohio State were seriously interested in adding Beck, and Blanchard was one of the first to retweet it.
Beck spent four seasons at Georgia, serving as the team’s starter in 2023-24. During his time with the Bulldogs, Beck has completed 68.0% of his attempts for 7,912 yards with 58 touchdowns and 20 interceptions.
His best season was 2023, when he completed 72.4% of his attempts for 3,941 yards and 24 touchdowns to just six interceptions. That led to him being touted as the Heisman favorite entering the 2024 season, but he ended up regressing a bit, completing 64.7% for 3,485 yards and 28 touchdowns with 12 interceptions.
Texas Tech currently has the No. 1 overall transfer class in this cycle, per On3’s rankings, and adding Beck to their list of additions would serve as the ultimate cherry on top.
The Red Raiders’ class is currently comprised of 17 incoming players, seven of which are listed as four-star additions.
