After transferring to Emporia State for the 2024 college football season, Mike Gundy’s son, Gunnar Gundy, is back in Stillwater in a new role.

According to a report from GoPokes247’s McClain Baxley, Gundy joined his father’s staff as the new quality control assistant for quarterbacks.

During his three-year career at Oklahoma State, Gundy saw limited action. He completed 40 passes for 449 yards and a touchdown to interception ratio of 4-4 in his first three years of eligibility. He also added 35 carries for 120 yards and a touchdown in the ground game.

For his senior season, Gundy transferred to play for Division 2 Emporia State, where he excelled as the team’s starting quarterback. Gundy threw for 2751 yards and a touchdown to interception ratio of 23-11 while adding five rushing scores.

While Gundy still has one final season of eligibility remaining, the Oklahoma native appears to be hanging up his cleats for a shot to coach in the Big 12 Conference.

“I’ve been very proud of Gunnar,” Gundy said upon his son transferring in 2023. “He came to me and said, ‘Dad, it doesn’t look like I’m going to be the starting quarterback here. I love to play football. I want to be on a team. It breaks my heart, but I feel like I need to go in the portal because that gives me a chance to do what I love to do.’ I said, ‘I understand that. I respect that.’ He had six or eight really good offers, Power Four offers. But he said, ‘I want to go to Emporia. They throw it 60 times a game. It’s relatively close to home. I really like the kids. I feel comfortable there. The community is like Stillwater.”

Gundy now shifts his focus to developing a young quarterback room that features athletes like Garret Rangel, Hauss Hejny, Maealiuaki Smith, Zane Flores, and Garret Wilson.
