Is there anything better than cold beer and baseball? It’s a combination that is hard to beat during the season. No matter what kind of beer you drink (or how many), let’s take a look at some of the best action on the Big 12 baseball diamond from Sunday with a nice six pack.
Best Game
Houston vs Minnesota
The Cougars found themselves down 2-0 early in the game but thanks to an error and a clutch hit from Aaron Lugo, Houston took a one run lead going into the fourth inning.
Minnesota would tie the game up soon after but once again the Cougars grabbed the lead back thanks to Aaron Lugo with his RBI triple.
But the Gophers didn’t go away easily. Drew Berkland crushed a three-run bomb which ended up giving Minnesota a 6-5 lead.
Jake Tatom ended up tying the game in the seventh inning before a walk and a sac-fly by Tyler Cox put the Cougars up by two. Minnesota would score on an error in the ninth inning to make it a one run game but Houston held on for the win to secure the series.
Best Win
Cincinnati over #11 Duke
How about the Cincinnati Bearcats? They go to Durham, North Carolina and get a top 15 series win on the road. While the first two games of this series were close, Sunday’s game was a complete blowout.
Thanks to a pair of walks, the Bearcats got up early and never looked back. Cincinnati scored a whopping 19 runs on Sunday and once again Kerrington Cross was the man who led the way as he finished with a team high five RBIs.
It was by far the best series win in the Big 12 this weekend and a great way for Cincinnati to start their season. This series win will go a long way and will be great for their resume come selection day.
Worst Loss
#21 Arizona vs Louisville
As great as it was to see the Wildcats make their Big 12 baseball debut in Arlington, it has been a rough weekend for Arizona in the Lone Star State. They lost to Ole Miss on Friday in a close one, lost by double digits to Clemson on Saturday and lost by 12 on Sunday against Louisville.
Not only has Arizona struggled to score runs but they also have given up way too many runs for one weekend. The Wildcats were considered to be one of the favorites to win the Big 12 but they certainly didn’t look like it this past weekend.
Sunday MVP
UCF LF Matt Prevesk
Matt played a big role in UCF’s dominating win over Siena. He knocked in a pair of runs in the first inning and then followed that up with back-to-back jacks in his next two at bats to bring his RBI total to five on the day.
Pitcher of the Day
UCF RHP Grant Siegel
Coming in from West Virginia, Grant made a huge splash in his UCF debut on Sunday afternoon. He pitched five full innings and didn’t allow a single run against Siena. In fact, he allowed just two hits during his time on the mound.
Best Home Run
TCU RF Noah Franco
The true freshman hit his first two home runs of his career on Sunday against San Diego. His first one was great but the second one he absolutely crushed. That ball ended up traveling 450 feet which is wild for a freshman.
