Big 12 Baseball Sunday Six-Pack: Oklahoma State Stays Hot in Houston

Oklahoma State's Nolan Schubart (10) celebrates a home run with Donovan LaSalle (19) and Zach Ehrhard (4) in the first inning during the college Bedlam baseball game between Oklahoma State University Cowboys and the University of Oklahoma Sooners at O'Brate Stadium in Stillwater, Okla., Friday, April 5, 2024.

Is there anything better than cold beer and baseball? It’s a combination that is hard to beat during the season. No matter what kind of beer you drink (or how many), let’s take a look at some of the best action on the Big 12 baseball diamond from Sunday with a nice six pack.

Best Game

Arizona State vs Minnesota

After dropping the first two games of the series, the Sun Devils needed to win on Sunday to avoid the sweep. The Sun Devils jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead, but it didn’t take long for the Gophers to respond. A solo blast by Isaiah Cromwick gave Arizona State the lead back and an error added another score.

Minnesota would put a run on the board in the sixth, but Arizona State ended up putting up a five spot in the bottom of the inning highlighted by Brandon Compton’s double that brought in a pair of runs.

But the Gophers wouldn’t go away easily. They ended up scoring four runs in the seventh inning to pull within two. Then in the ninth, they were able to cut the lead down to one with a runner on third. Thankfully, Arizona State was able to hold on for the win.

Best Win

Oklahoma State

The Cowboys capped off a great weekend in Houston with a nice win over a top 20 Mississippi State team on Sunday. Thanks to a five run third innings, the Pokes were able to jump out to an early lead and never look back.

And of course, superstar Nolan Schubart’s three-run bomb helped secure the win over the Bulldogs.

It was a big win for the Cowboys who have now beaten back-to-back ranked SEC teams. I guess it truly does mean more.

Worst Loss

Cincinnati

I could have easily put Texas Tech here after their rough weekend in Vegas, but nobody had a worse weekend in the Big 12 than Cincinnati. The Bearcats came into the weekend inside the top 25 but they went 1-3 against UC San Diego this weekend after their 5-0 loss on Sunday. In their last two games of the series, Cincinnati scored just two runs.

Sunday MVP

Houston 3B Aaron Lugo

I haven’t talked much about Houston this season, but I had to give a shout out to third baseman Aaron Lugo for his performance on Sunday. He finished with a team high six RBIs against UT Arlington which included a pair of doubles.

Pitcher of the Day

Kansas State LHP Lincoln Sheffield

For the second time this season, Lincoln is my Big 12 pitcher of the day. Against Nebraska, Lincoln pitched a little over six innings and gave up just two runs while striking out seven. He is quickly emerging as one of the best pitchers in the Big 12.

Best Home Run

Oklahoma State RF Nolan Schubart

I know I already showed this home run, but it truly was a big one considering the fact that it helped give the Cowboys some insurance runs against Mississippi State on Sunday.
