Following a loss to Kansas State that effectively ended the Bearcats’ chances at receiving an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, Cincinnati head coach Wes Miller put together an intense rant.
He accepted accountability for the lack of effort, mentioning that the loss falls on “his ass.”
“First of all, give Kansas State credit,” Miller said. “Give Coach Tang and his group credit. It’s unacceptable. The effort is unacceptable the fight is unacceptable. It’s on the head coach. I did it. I’m the leader of the operation and I gotta do a better damn job. It’s on my ass. I’d boo myself too.”
The Bearcats had been climbing up the bubble ranks in recent weeks, sitting at the next four out category, and with two games remaining, the team had a legit shot at reaching the NCAA Tournament. Now, after falling to Kansas State, which likely ends up as a Quad 2 loss, Cincinnati has to run the ladder in the Big 12 Tournament to make it happen.
“God damn, that was unacceptable,” Miller continued. “I have never seen that team. I don’t even know who that team was [referring to Cincinnati’s effort]. I apologize to everyone who bought a ticket and watched that, I apologize. You guys should be on my butt, I deserve it. Tonight was unacceptable and it starts with the head coach.”
The Bearcats close out the season on Saturday, March 8th, on the road against Oklahoma State.
