While they may not be members of the Big 12 Conference anymore, two former league members are finding themselves in hot water due to some recent struggles.
Those two are Oklahoma’s Porter Moser and Texas‘ Rodney Terry, who were both placed on the hot seat in a recent list from On3’s Pete Nakos.
“Sitting at 18-12 on the season and 5-12 in SEC play, Oklahoma has a decision coming on the future of Porter Moser,” Nakos said. “The Sooners have won three of 10 games since the beginning of February, notably beating No. 15 Missouri on Wednesday night. After starting the season 13-0, the conference schedule continues to be a problem for Moster at Oklahoma. He went to a Final Four and Sweet 16 at Loyola Chicago but is yet to recapture that success in Norman. Oklahoma is 72-56 in four seasons under Moser, entering Saturday’s regular-season finale against Texas. Moser’s buyout sits at $7.65 million.”
While buyouts become the name of the game when it comes to moving on from coaches, Moser’s seven million-dollar exit fee isn’t very tough to overcome. With the Sooners on the bubble for the NCAA Tournament, the next few weeks will play a big part in the group’s evaluation of Porter Moser.
“Viewed as one of the top college basketball jobs in the country, Rodney Terry opened the season 11-2 but entered the final weekend of the regular season at 17-13,” Nakos wrote. “Terry stepped in as the interim coach for the Longhorns in December 2022, leading the team to the NCAA Tournament and eventually the Elite Eight. Terry stepped into the role due to Chris Bear’s suspension and firing. Texas ultimately decided to hire Terry after the March Madness run. But now Terry will have to make some noise this March to save his job. The Longhorns are 60-34 in three seasons under Terry, including the interim stint. His buyout sits around $5.5 million, and Texas is viewed as a first-four team out in the NCAA Tournament by some forecasts.”
Texas head coach Rodney Terry has been a hot name in coaching circles over the past few years, not just due to the Longhorns’ post-season success but due to his off-the-court antics. Terry made it very clear that he did not appreciate the horns down hang signal as well as other teams celebrating wins. Since his rocky time in the Big 12, he’s planted himself squarely on the hot seat due to some recent struggles.
