Big 12 baseball is in full swing, with conference play underway this weekend. Last week, I posted my first Big 12 baseball power rankings of the year for our message board users and now I am bringing it out for the world to see!
#1 West Virginia
I had the Mountaineers at number two last week, but after a win against Oklahoma State on Sunday, I decided to give them the top spot for the week as they move to 16-1 on the season.
#2 Oklahoma State
After a Sunday loss to West Virginia, I dropped the Cowboys down a spot for the time being. I wish we could have gotten a full series out of Oklahoma State, but due to local fires, they were only able to play one game this weekend.
#3 Kansas
If the Jayhawks swept Baylor this past weekend, I would have considered putting them at number one. However, the Bears managed to win the Sunday and avoid the sweep. Keep an eye on this team because nobody has hit more home runs than them.
#4 Arizona State
It’s not easy taking a series in Fort Worth, but that is exactly what the Sun Devils did this past weekend. They lost Friday night in a close one but then managed to win back-to-back games to go back to Tempe with a series win.
#5 Arizona
Break out the brooms in Tucson because the Wildcats handled the Bearcats with ease as they outscored them 33 to 8 in their three-game series. Watch out for this team because they are on the rise.
#6 Kansas State
Speaking of sweeps, Kansas State just swept a hot Utah team. The Wildcats offense exploded and put up a ton of runs against the Utes. Much like Arizona, this is a team to keep an eye on this season.
#7 TCU
I thought TCU would be one of the best teams in the Big 12, but they have let me down twice over the weekend, first against Southern Miss and now against Arizona State.
#8 UCF
It’s hard for me to judge this team right now, but I was impressed with the way they handled themselves after a snow delay on Saturday in Provo. A series win was big, but I want to see more from this team.
#9 Texas Tech
After being ranked dead last a week ago, the Red Raiders have now climbed inside the top 10 after sweeping Houston on the road. By no means am I fully bought in on this team, but I liked what I saw these past three games.
#10 Baylor
The Bears were one of the most disappointing teams in the conference this weekend after taking on the Jayhawks in Lawrence. I thought their pitching was elite, but they got absolutely rocked this past weekend.
#11 Cincinnati
At one point this team was ranked inside the top 25. Since then, it’s been a total nightmare for this team, losing game after game. And after being swept by Arizona in dominating fashion, I don’t trust this team one bit.
#12 Houston
Houston was one of the most disappointing teams this past weekend after getting swept by Texas Tech. Have they improved from a year ago? Who knows.
#13 BYU
The Cougars put up one hell of a fight against UCF but just fell short. While I may have them ranked towards the bottom of this list, I think BYU can give some teams fits this season.
#14 Utah
I had my doubts about Utah this season, and that came true this past weekend when they got swept against Kansas State on the road.
