On Monday, the first player to hit the transfer portal from West Virginia surfaced, and that player is a big one.

On3’s Joe Tipton was the first to announce that West Virginia’s impressive freshman guard Jonathan Powell has decided to go portaling following a successful first year of college basketball.

In 2024-25, Powell saw action in all 32 games, averaging 30.1 minutes per night. He posted 8.3 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 0.7 assists per game on 37.8% shooting from the field in his first year with the Mountaineers.

Coming out of Centerville High School in the Class of 2024, Powell was listed as a three-star prospect by the 247Sports index and the nation’s 138th-ranked player. He also checked in as the 27th-ranked player at his position and the fifth-ranked player in the state of Ohio.

The move comes just one day after the Mountaineers controversially missed the NCAA Tournament, being snubbed from the tournament field after being included in the field on 111 of 111 different bracketologists’ projections.

The transfer portal officially opens on Monday, March 24, 2025. According to NCAA data, 1,296 FBS basketball players entered the transfer portal in 2023-24 school year, with 864 (66.7%) undergraduates and 432 (33.3%) graduate transfers. Of the entrants, 70% reported that they enrolled in another school, 6% withdrew their names from the portal, and 23% are still active, transferred to a non-NCAA school, or left their sport.
