There are several major coaching vacancies across college basketball as the 2025 NCAA Tournament gets underway.
In recent weeks, we’ve seen programs like Indiana, Virginia, Villanova, and Iowa come available.
West Virginia head coach Darian DeVries is one of the hottest names on the coaching market right now and was recently reported to be the “top candidate” for the Indiana job.
According to Jeff Goodman, DeVries is the Hoosiers’ main focus, with Drake head coach Ben McCollum and a third “mystery” candidate also in the mix. There are other schools that could be vying for DeVries services, too, but according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, it won’t be one of Indiana’s closest competitors.
Shortly after DeVries’s name was connected to Indiana, Thamel reported that West Virginia’s head coach is not a candidate to fill the vacancy at Iowa.
Now, that doesn’t clear him from the opening at Indiana, and it might even suggest that the Hoosiers are all-in on him. However, it does mean there is one less school for the Mountaineers to deal with.
DeVries has been at West Virginia for just one season, taking over a program that was left in a difficult spot after parting ways with Bob Huggins. Still, DeVries led the Mountaineers to a 19-13 (10-10 Big 12) record and should’ve had WVU in the NCAA Tournament.
The West Virginia Mountaineers were a shocking no-show on Selection Sunday, missing out on being selected in the 2025 NCAA Tournament, despite being projected to make the Big Dance by every expert.
