It appears that another major college basketball program could be looking for a new head coach for 2025 as several reports suggest that Texas will part ways with third-year head coach Rodney Terry.

The Longhorns were eliminated in the First Four game with an 86-80 loss to Xavier on Wednesday night. The Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman was the first to report the news, saying Texas is “likely to make a move” after their season came to an end.

A conflicting report from Houston Chronicle’s Kirk Bohls makes this situation incredibly interesting, however, as the longtime Texas insider says there is “nothing even close to imminent in the Texas basketball coaching situation.”

Terry originally took the helm as Texas’ interim head coach after Chris Beard’s mid-season dismissal in 2021-22. In his first season, the Longhorns made a spirited run to the Elite Eight. However, they missed the tournament in 2024, and last night, they blew a 13-point second-half lead.

It’s an interesting situation, as ESPN’s Pete Thamel suggested that a decision on Terry’s future was not “imminent” on Selection Sunday, but perhaps the one-and-done was just too much for UT brass.

Either way, Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte has an important decision to make moving forward, and depending on which direction he chooses, there’s another significant job potentially up for grabs.
