On Tuesday afternoon, an interesting development took place, leading to an intense battle between in-state rivals for one of the best scorers in the transfer portal.

According to some recent reports from On3’s Joe Tipton and ThePortalScoop, both Kansas and Kansas State have scheduled Zoom calls with Monmouth transfer guard Abdi Bashir Jr.

Bashir Jr. is one of the most explosive players available in the transfer portal this offseason and is coming off an incredible year with Monmouth. In 2024-25, the Nebraska native posted 20.1 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game on 37.7% shooting from the field. He also led the country with 127 three-pointers made, averaging 3.8 per game.

Coming out of Pheonix Prep in the Class of 2023, Bashir was listed as an unranked prospect by most major recruiting services. Since then, he’s developed into a four-star prospect on the 247Sports index and the 46th-ranked player available in the transfer portal.

The transfer portal officially opened on Monday, March 24, 2025. According to NCAA data, 1,296 FBS basketball players entered the transfer portal in the 2023-24 school year, with 864 (66.7%) undergraduates and 432 (33.3%) graduate transfers. Of the entrants, 70% reported that they enrolled in another school, 6% withdrew their names from the portal, and 23% are still active, transferred to a non-NCAA school, or left their sport.
