On Sunday morning, Ross Hodge and the West Virginia Mountaineers added a second player through the transfer portal in as many days with the commitment of Sun Belt forward.
Troy’s Jackson Fields is the latest player to commit to West Virginia, heading to Morgantown after a solid year with the Trojans.
The Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman was the first to break the news, saying, “West Virginia has landed Troy transfer Jackson Fields. The 6-8 junior forward averaged 7.9 points and 4.8 rebounds this past season.”
In 2024, Fields posted 7.9 points and 4.8 rebounds per game on 48.7% shooting from the field. He saw action in 34 games for the group, starting all but one. At Troy, the Texas native played a total of 95 games and started 60 of them.
Coming out of Elkins High School in the Class of 2022, most major recruiting services listed Fields as an unranked prospect. Interestingly enough, he was a talented dual-sport athlete who received seven offers to play college football, including interest from Air Force, Wyoming, Nevada, UTSA, Army, and more.
The transfer portal officially opened on Monday, March 24, 2025. According to NCAA data, 1,296 FBS basketball players entered the transfer portal in the 2023-24 school year, with 864 (66.7%) undergraduates and 432 (33.3%) graduate transfers. Of the entrants, 70% reported that they enrolled in another school, 6% withdrew their names from the portal, and 23% are still active, transferred to a non-NCAA school, or left their sport.
